Your Feet

Computerized foot scan

Ill-fitting shoes and general foot neglect are responsible for the majority of foot problems. It's important to understand your feet have direct impact on the rest of your body and support you with each step. A small abnormality in foot function can have a large impact on joints higher up in the body, causing pain and discomfort. When you are running, the pressure on your feet can be three or four times your body weight. Even walking can produce more pressure than the sum of your body weight. The American Podiatric Medical Association says that the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. That adds up to about 115,000 miles in a lifetime or more than four times the circumference of the globe. That is a lot of walking with ill-fitting shoes or painful joints.

Women have four times as many foot problems as men because they have a long history of wearing high heels and/or pointy toe shoes.

To begin, a thorough evaluation including a computerized foot scan is completed. This scan is reviewed with each person to understand the foot mechanics. If orthotics are necessary, the order is placed and you receive your new orthotics in 2 weeks time.

Orthotics and proper shoe fit are very important aspects to not only foot function but to reducing stress on other joints of the body such as your knees, hips and your lower back.

Dr. Pam Asks some important questions of interest to Markham residents - Chiropractor Markham Dr. Pam Asks...

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
Are aches and pains good or bad?
While aches or pains may be unpleasant, they're merely warning signs. As a Markham chiropractor, I see this all the time. The pain is not the problem! It just means a limitation has been reached and something needs to change. That's when we get to work correcting the underlying cause.
